Last night I watched a bit of the Bruce Springsteen VH1 Storytellers DVD which had Bruce singing a handful of songs and explaining, almost lecture-style how they were written. it's pretty entertaining but kind of strange, a cross between a lecture and a show. He's an articulate guy especially when it comes to what he does. My only problem with that programme is the audience they have always seem so whitebread. Every 'member of public' had a long, articulate, structured question to ask which was sort of better than the Birtish 'an audience with' where you get some dodgy soap star to ask a pre-programmed question. They should have just got some fans to ask him if he ever found his canoe or how his other wife actually found out he was doing Patti. The songs list leans too heavily on the last album but it's got thunder road and nebraska on it which are cool.
Then I met up with Leah at a pub near the station for a catch-up which was cool. We were going to swing by Raffles but time kind of escaped and Joe said that the last band would be a funk band. From his text he was very drunk so I tried to get him to do his 'hard hitting' performance art piece 'Did i ever tell you about the time I kissed Vanessa Mae' in front of a live audience but I don't think he'll ever be that drunk. I came home early as sofa cushion sleep is worth about 80% of real sleep.
Things are shaping up Barcelona wise. Alyssa has found some possible apartments so it's just a case of seeing if everyone agrees and then it's time to book flights. I spoke with Chris at the Freedom Sound/Clambake show the other day who said that her and Nathan might be going again which would be cool. For some reason I'm expecting loads of British people to go this year because there is no Glasto - perhaps it won't work that way but instead Reading/leeds will just sell out quicker or someone will put something else on.
I'm reading THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA at the moment. I forgot how much i love that book. The use of italics/bold/capitols for emphasis throughout is pretty cool and there are some funny stories in it. My copy has about a 2 inch triange ripped off one of the pages ( i bought it long after it was released in hardback but before the paperback and felt lucky to have found a copy until I found the rip). It's a pretty crucial page so I'm going to ask some Zappa chatboard somewhere to fill in the missing words for me.
As for the weekend. No real plans - Joe's tonight (I've hardly lived at Joes at all this week mainly becasue of my UNECESSARY housework)perhaps Rescued on Saturday and I'm going to visit Debbie'nan on Sunday with her (*note to self buy Debbie's nan a present/card). I haven't seen her for ages and get on well with her. It always amuses me how people I know interact with their families. People who are used to fielding all manner of banter, suddenly become prone to button pushing when it's their relatives. it's always good natured with Deb and her nan but also amusing. I'm sure I'm the same.
I'm going to pick up the real version of the new cat power album at the weekend too. Ordinarily I'd hve bought it on the way home, the day it came out (I think I once had the day off for one coming out) but having heard the rough mixes, I think it'll be the weakest one yet, but things may have changed since then.
